Why it’s important to drink plenty of fluids when you have vertigo

When you have vertigo, especially from problems in the labyrinth (the inner ear that regulates balance), staying well hydrated plays an important role in improving symptoms.

What does water do?
The labyrinth contains fluids that are involved in regulating balance. When you don’t drink enough, your body becomes dehydrated and the pressure or flow of these fluids can be disrupted, causing or intensifying vertigo.
Especially in conditions such as Meniere’s disease or other inner ear disorders, adequate fluid intake helps:
– Stabilize the pressure inside the labyrinth
– Improve the circulation of intralabyrinthine fluids
– Avoid vertigo attacks or reduce their intensity

Practical advice:
Aim for 1.5–2 liters of water per day (unless your doctor tells you otherwise). Avoid salty foods and excessive caffeine, as they affect the body’s fluid regulation.

Simply put:
The more well-hydrated you are, the more “calmly” your balance system works.
