About 25% of all adults are affected by fatty liver and the number is constantly increasing. Many will be diagnosed but not given the proper seriousness that this condition should have. Because fatty liver increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, liver inflammation and even liver cancer. High blood pressure as well as cardiovascular disease are also often associated with fatty liver. Of the severely obese and diabetic, about 85% have fatty liver and every third obese child suffers from this disease. The stages of the disease are three:
Stage 1: pure fatty liver without inflammatory reaction
Stage 2: fatty liver with inflammatory reaction (it develops in almost every second person affected)
Stage 3: Cirrhosis (fatty cirrhosis, about ten percent of cases) with an increased chance of liver cancer. Proper nutrition along with medication (only in difficult cases) is the appropriate treatment. The fatty liver deserves a lot of attention and should not be left untreated because its effect on health is devastating.
